Abstract

The Montane Bamboo Rat (Dactylomys peruanus, J. A. Allen 1900) is an elusive rodent inhabitant of the cloud forests of southeastern Peru and northern Bolivia at elevations between 1000 and 3300 meters above sea level. This species is known from only a handful of documented records in both countries, and in Bolivia, only two specimens were collected in the early 1980s in La Paz Department. This work reports three new records from two locations not far from Cotapata, where this species was first recorded more than forty years ago: Sacramento Alto and Irupana. Additionally, historical records of this species in Bolivia are reviewed, and new insights on the type of habitat in which it has been found are provided.
