Obituary of Professor Alberto Cadena, 1938-2026

Abstract

Alberto Cadena-García (Professor Cadena) was one of the pioneers and greatest figures in the field of mammalogy in Colombia. Anyone interested in Colombian mammals should read the tribute paid to him during his lifetime in a special issue of the journal Caldasia 43(2), dedicated exclusively to Colombian mammals. This issue includes an excellent piece highlighting Professor Cadena's greatest achievements. Additionally, one of the most important awards given by the Colombian Society of Mammalogy (SCMas) in recognition of mammalogical work bears his name. He passed away recently, but left us an immense and undeniable legacy, represented by a school of fortunate individuals who were able to learn and enjoy biology, and especially mammals, with him. That legacy continues to grow among students and all those who apply the principles of generosity, rigor, and curiosity that Professor Cadena instilled. In this particular editorial of Mammalogy Notes, some of his former students have shared their experiences with him.
