Abstract
The southern flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans) has a discontinuous distribution from southern Canada to Honduras. It has been previously recorded in two locations: the municipalities of Tecpán and San Miguel Dueñas, in the departments of Chimaltenango and Sacatepéquez, respectively. In this note, we report the presence of the flying squirrel in Guatemala after 64 years, detected through camera trapping in the department of Quetzaltenango, in a patch of pine-oak forest known as Cerro Kaxtún. We discuss the conservation status of G. volans populations and their nocturnal and arboreal behavior. We recommend focusing research strategies and actions on this species to determine its distribution, population status, and ecological aspects.
