Abstract

The Guagua loba, Dinomys branickii (Peters 1873), is the second largest rodent in Colombia and the only representative of the Dinomyidae family. For the department of Norte de Santander, the only known evidence is deposited in the scientific collection of the Alexander von Humboldt Institute (IAvH) - Bogotá, corresponding to a skin donated by hunters in the Río Negro region, El Diamante village, municipality of Toledo. The first records with camera traps are presented. These correspond to a juvenile male and a calf in the municipality of Los Patios, Norte de Santander. The records are the northernmost in the species' range and show the importance of phototrapping to detect rare, cryptic or little-known species. It is necessary to collect more information about mammals in transformed ecosystems, establish monitoring and conservation programs for this species in the region, and establish strategies to connect the Bs-T relics that still persist.
