Abstract
The Rock Squirrel (Otospermophilus variegatus) is distributed from the southwestern United States of America through the center of Oaxaca, Mexico. Although widely distributed, information about its natural history is relatively scarce. This note describes the first record of the Rock Squirrel for the municipality of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan, Oaxaca, Mexico, obtained by photographic evidence. The specimen of O. variegatus was observed and photographed in a locality with xerophytic vegetation. The subsistence of this species in the locality could be due to the presence of maize and alfalfa crops. Future research are necessary to know its abundance and ecological relationship in the area.
