Abstract

The Neotropical River Otter Lontra Longicaudis (Olfers, 1818), is a semi-aquatic mammal that occupies a wide geographical distribution, from Mexico to northern Argentina (Waldemarin & Colares 2000, Arellano et al. 2012). It is a fairly versatile species, which tolerates certain environmental modifications and can occupy areas close to areas of anthropogenic activity. However, the highest density populations are found in areas with extensive aquatic networks, low chemical pollution and organic load, and low human density (Larivière 1999, Charre-Medellín et al. 2011, Botello et al. 2006). They basically feed on fish, crustaceans, mollusks and are consumers of small mammals, birds, reptiles, insects and even fruits (Larivière 1999, Quadros & Monteiro-Filho 2000, Gallo-Reynoso et al. 2008, Botello et al. 2006, Charre -Medellín et al. 2011). This note records the predation of a juvenile slug (Caiman crocodilus fuscus) by the Neotropical Otter, an unusual behavior for the species, in addition to the modification of its activity schedule due to the growing tourist demand in the monitored river.
